On Detection Issues in the SC-based Uplink of a MU-MIMO System with a Large Number of BS Antennas
This paper deals with SC/FDE within a MU-MIMO system where a large number of
BS antennas is adopted. In this context, either linear or reduced-complexity
iterative DF detection techniques are considered. Regarding performance
evaluation by simulation, appropriate semi-analytical methods are proposed.
This paper includes a detailed evaluation of BER performances for uncoded
4-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (4-QAM) schemes and a MU-MIMO channel with
uncorrelated Rayleigh fading. The accuracy of performance results obtained
through the semi-analytical simulation methods is assessed by means of parallel
conventional Monte Carlo simulations, under the assumptions of perfect power
control and perfect channel estimation. The performance results are discussed
in detail, with the help of selected performance bounds. We emphasize that a
moderately large number of BS antennas is enough to closely approximate the
SIMO MFB performance, especially when using the suggested low-complexity
iterative DF technique, which does not require matrix inversion operations. We
also emphasize the achievable "massive MIMO" effects, even for strongly
reduced-complexity linear detection techniques, provided that the number of BS
antennas is much higher than the number of antennas which are jointly employed
in the terminals of the multiple autonomous users.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

An Investigation of People with Persistent Low Back Pain and High Pain-Related Fear
Pain that is interpreted as threatening can lead to fear, avoidance and disengagement from valued activities. Low back pain (LBP) associated with high pain-related fear is disabling. The body of work presented in this doctoral thesis aims to better understand the relationship between pain, fear and disability; and how the process of change unfolds for individuals with persistent LBP and high pain-related fear over the course of an exposure-based behavioural intervention
Sensorial interaction with packaging and its effect on purchase intention of a new body care brand : duality between offline and online distribution channels
The present thesis addresses the sensorial challenges between offline and online channels in
the interaction with new brands’ packaging and its impact on purchase intention. Through
different distribution channels, consumers’ interaction with products and consequent purchase
outcome, are distinct – on online channel the individual is solely dependent on sight, whereas
on offline sensorial interaction allows more dimensions. Therefore, is the online channel a
good platform to launch new products?
The above mentioned reasoning was applied to FMCG. Particularly, it was done through the
creation of a new body care brand and products with subsequent observational study of
participants’ purchase. In order to be able to study the role of senses, one of the developed
packaging had multisensory features and the other was a simpler version.
The study was completed on offline and online channels, in collaboration with LERNE, and
purchasing settings were made to resemble real retailers. Participants conducted purchases in
both offline and online channels and results were studied for significance.
To understand if the paths-of-purchase “offlineàonline” and “onlineàoffline” impacted
purchase intention, half of the participants were asked to follow each path.
Ultimately, this thesis was able to demonstrate positive impact of sensorial interaction with
packaging on purchase intention. It was also concluded that a new product, in which sensorial
aspects are crucial, is more likely to achieve high purchase intention on offline channels rather
than online; being that, with statistical significance, the market potential is double for the
offline.
Can non-profit organizations boost regional development? : measuring the impact of Portuguese non-profit sector on criminality, culture and labor market
This master thesis studies the impact of the non-profit sector in the improvement
of regional development in Portuguese society at municipality level. This sector
plays an important role in supporting different needs and interests in our society,
exacerbated by the economic downturn from the past few years, which led to a
significant decline in hou wealth and in turn dramatically increased the
demand for the services and products provided by those entities. Therefore, the
primary concern of this research is to measure the impact of this sector, through
the number of establishments and employees, in Portuguese regional
development through three dimensions: criminality, culture and labor market,
for the period between 2004 and 2012.
Regarding the criminality dimension, the results suggest a positive effect of the
number of non-profit establishments and employees in the reduction of the
number of crimes reported in Portuguese municipalities. With regard to the
culture dimension, the results suggest that no impact exists between the number
of non-profit establishments and employees and cultural consumption of
Portuguese municipalities. Finally, regarding the labor market dimension, the
results shown a positive effect of the number of non-profit establishments in the
reduction of the number of unemployed registered in Portuguese municipalities
and no impact regarding the number of employees in the non-profit sector
A Nova Formulação de Calcipotriol/Dipropionato de Betametasona em Espuma Cutânea para o Tratamento da Psoríase
Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory, immune-mediated, potentially disfiguring and disabling skin disorder, affecting over 100 million individuals worldwide. Calcipotriol plus betamethasone fixed-combination (0.005% Cal/0.064% BD) is the recommended topical treatment for psoriasis. However, topical treatments are associated to lack of efficacy and low adhesion rates due to poor cosmetic characteristics’ formulations, and vehicle issues. To answer the need for improving patients’ acceptability and adherence, an innovative Cal/BD aerosol foam formulation was developed for the topical treatment of adults with plaque psoriasis. Phase II and III clinical trials have consistently shown that the two-compound formulation is more effective and safer than its individual ingredients in the same vehicle. Cal/BD aerosol foam formulation has proved higher efficacy in clinical studies, and a pooled analysis of the main clinical studies has demonstrated that this does not occur at the safety profile expense. Furthermore, Cal/BD aerosol foam has shown a significantly improved efficacy compared with more traditional formulations, such as ointments, gels, and lotions. The improved efficacy and safety profile of this new formulation, together with the once-daily treatment, a more acceptable tolerability profile, and an early and rapid response, offers improved convenience and better acceptance over the twice- -daily applications required for the respective monotherapies, which may improve adherence to treatment, leading to faster and greater improvements in HR-QoL, representing a useful therapeutic option to the management of patients with plaque psoriasis. Further clinical investigations to explore the possibility of Cal/BD aerosol foam treatment ability to provide long-term psoriasis’ management are required.
